On the slope of Verga, on the way toward Mount Kalathi, Taverna Petralono has stood in the same spot for over twenty years: a family-run business with a vegetable garden out back and a sea-view balcony out front.
What’s on the menu
The house specialty is rooster with pasta (κόκκορας με χυλοπίτες), stewed the traditional way with tomato, alongside roasted goat. Many of the vegetables that reach your table are grown by the family themselves — nothing imported, just whatever’s in the garden that week.
The view
Petralono sits high above the Gulf of Messinia. In summer, the balcony is noticeably cooler in the evening than the city, with a panorama over Kalamata and the sea that’s at its best around sunset.
