In the neighbourhood around Kalamata’s old railway line, far from the seafront promenade, sit tavernas with no English menu and no photos on the price list. This is where locals eat, and prices run noticeably lower than along the coast.
How to spot one
No sea-view terrace, no sandwich board out front trying to pull you in. Often just plain chairs, a handwritten menu — or no menu at all, you simply ask what’s on today. If most of the tables around you are speaking Greek in the afternoon, you’re in the right place.
What to order
Ask for the dish of the day (το πιάτο της ημέρας) instead of picking from the fixed menu. That’s usually whatever was made fresh that morning, and often the best thing on offer.
Timing
Local tavernas open later in the evening than most tourists expect, often not before eight, and don’t really fill up until after nine. Arrive at seven and you’ll often have the place to yourself.
