For families with kids, the Kalamata Municipal Railway Park makes a surprisingly fun stop: an open-air museum full of old locomotives and carriages, right in the centre near the harbour.
Why kids love it
The large, real trains can be viewed up close, and some can even be climbed inside — exactly the kind of adventure that sparks the imagination of kids (and adults). There’s also a playground, plus a basketball and volleyball court for anyone who’d rather move around.
For the whole family
The park is more than just the trains: the old station building houses a cafe, and there’s plenty of shade to relax in while the kids play. A pleasant, free stop between two other activities.
The railway is stirring back to life
Kalamata’s actual railway line has sat unused for years, but a volunteer association of rail enthusiasts has since run a handful of one-off ceremonial trips on a short stretch of track near the station — most recently in June 2026, as part of a campaign to restore the line toward Messini and beyond. This isn’t an ongoing, bookable attraction (no tickets, no fixed schedule), but it’s an interesting bit of local context if you’re already at the park: this is the very track that may one day carry trains again.
