Day Trip to Pylos and Voidokilia

A day along the coast northwest of Kalamata: the omega-shaped beach of Voidokilia, the Bay of Navarino near Pylos, and the Venetian castle of Methoni. This is the same route Christopher Nolan picked as a backdrop for The Odyssey — we were already bringing visitors here long before a camera showed up.

What you’ll see

  • Voidokilia beach — the famous omega-shaped beach with the Gialova lagoon behind it.
  • Old Navarino Castle (Palaiokastro) — a Frankish-Venetian ruin on the hill right above Voidokilia, with views over the beach and lagoon.
  • Bay of Navarino, Pylos — the large natural bay, historically known for the Battle of Navarino (1827).
  • Castle of Methoni — a 15th-century Venetian fortress with the Burtzi at its tip, where waves crash against the rocks in windy weather.

Good to know

  • Travel time from Kalamata: about 50 minutes to Voidokilia/Pylos, about 1 hour 10 to Methoni.
  • Plan a full day to cover all four stops at a relaxed pace.
  • Small groups, your own pace — no large tour bus.
  • Optional: a boat trip to the island of Sapienza off the coast of Methoni, if you have time to spare.
