Couldn’t find a direct flight to Kalamata, or travelling outside the flight season (autumn through spring)? Then you’ll land at Athens International Airport and continue overland. There’s no train connection between Athens and Kalamata — Kalamata’s railway station is currently only served by occasional heritage excursion trains, not regular service. The KTEL Messinias bus is the practical route.
From the airport to the bus terminal
Athens Airport has no bus stop of its own for Kalamata. You first need to get to the Kifisos Bus Terminal (also called Terminal A, or the Peloponnese terminal), on Leoforos Kifisou 100, Peristeri — the departure point for all KTEL buses heading into the Peloponnese.
The simplest way: bus X93, which runs directly between the airport and Kifisos 24/7, roughly every 30 to 40 minutes. Board at the arrivals hall between Exit 4 and 5. The ride takes about an hour and costs €6 (full fare) or €3 (reduced, for children, students and seniors) — buy your ticket at the kiosk or on board. Note: the bus also stops at another terminal (Liosion) along the way, so don’t get off until Kifisos, the last stop.
The bus to Kalamata
From Kifisos Bus Terminal, KTEL Messinias runs direct services to Kalamata. Expect around 10 buses a day, with most departures between 06:00 and 21:30 — exact times shift occasionally by season, so always check the current schedule at ktelmessinias.gr before you travel.
The journey takes about 3 to 3.25 hours, usually with a short stop along the way (at the Corinth Isthmus and/or Tripoli). A one-way ticket costs €26.60 per adult according to the official price list. The bus arrives at Kalamata’s KTEL station on Artemidos Street, about a 15-minute walk from the centre.
Practical tips
- Tickets: you can book ahead online through the KTEL Messinias ticketing system, or simply buy one at the counter at Kifisos. One traveller noted that even a ticket booked online still needs to be “activated” at the counter before boarding — worth keeping in mind.
- Arrive early: be there 20 to 30 minutes before departure.
- Comfort: the buses are generally comfortable, with air conditioning.
- Luggage: there’s a luggage hold under the bus for suitcases; we couldn’t pin down exact weight limits — ask KTEL Messinias directly if in doubt.
How much time should you budget?
Plan on losing a good chunk of your travel day from the moment you land: about an hour on the X93 to Kifisos, half an hour of buffer to buy a ticket and be at the bus on time, then 3 to 3.25 hours on the road to Kalamata. All told, that’s 4.5 to 5 hours with a favourable connection — with bad luck on bus timing, it can stretch toward 6 hours. Not a full day of travel, but a substantial bite out of your arrival day.
